True or false facts about shampoos

A lot of the information that we read online is only partially true, and sometimes, entirely false. We compiled and reviewed some popular and some strange statements below. 

Shampoo can damage your hair.

True. 
If you are using the wrong shampoo-type or shampooing your hair in excess, you might be doing yourself a disservice.

Shampooing hair twice is extremely necessary.

False. 
Only shampoo twice if you feel it is adequate. Otherwise, you might be exaggerating and damaging hair.

Shampoo can cause dandruff.

True. 
If the hair strains and the scalp are not washed properly, you might develop dandruff.

Washing your hair during your period is not good for your health.

False.
There is no proven relation between washing your hair and your period.

Washing your hair with hot water damages hair.

True.
High temperatures are known to dry out your hair structure and it stimulates the oil production in your roots. It also increases hair fall due to the alteration on the sebaceous glands that can clog the pores where hair grows. Those with seborrheic dermatitis should avoid hot water at all costs since oily roots can make it worse. In wintertime, use warm water as much as possible.

Adding hormones to your shampoo helps with hair growth.

False.
There is nothing proving that adding hormones can stimulate hair growth, especially if added topically.

Coldwater makes hair look shinier.

True.
In reality, it’s the hot water that damages the hair. Always use cold or warm water so your hair keeps its’ natural shine.

Hair will get used to shampoo’s formula over time.

False.
Typically, the longer you use a specific hair product, the better it reacts to your hair, as the effect accumulates. Some situations might change your hair structure over time, but oftentimes it is unrelated to your product usage. These hair changes could be related to applying chemical treatments, hormones (like a pregnancy), or weather changes within the year.

Does washing hair daily damage it?

False.
There is no proof that washing patterns improve or damaged hair. The frequency of your hair wash depends on multiple factors like:

  • hair type - oily hair needs to be washed more often than dry
  • weather - in the summer hair needs more cleaning
  • hairstyle - if you use lots of heavy products, you might want to remove them often
  • lifestyle – depending on your workout, outdoor activities, or exposure to pollution, you might want to wash hair more often

Shampoo can reduce hair volume.

True.
There are many products out there that decrease the electrostatic charge of the hair strands and assist in the cuticle closure, thereby reducing hair volume overall.

The larger the foam quantity, the cleaner the hair.

False.
There is no correlation between foam and cleanliness. Many shampoos clean hair without foam which is a byproduct of sulfates.
